아동체벌(Children Discipline) 에 관한 글로 원어민 표현 배우기 [영어읽을거리]

I think it is quite ridiculous that the government should be considering legislation to ban smacking. Every parent needs the right to be able to give a child a smack, not in order to cause physical harm or pain, but more as a shock tactic to stop a child from misbehaving or in some circumstances to stop them causing damage to themselves or other people. Some excessive physical punishment, but there are quite clear laws dealing with assault and bodily harm. If a parent causes physical harm to a child, then the police can use these laws to bring the parent to justice. My father used to give me the slipper and it never did me any harm. What is all the fuss about?

but more as가 들어가는 문장 자체를 해석을 매끄럽게 못할 수 있는데요.

not A but B 구문으로 해석하자면

"신체적 고통이나 위해를 가하기 위함이라고 보면 안되고 보다 더 아동들의 잘못을 막기위한  충격요법 또는 타인은 피해를 끼치지 않는 선에서 아동들에게 적절한 환경을 만들어주는 것이다"

라고 의역을 해봤는데,, 의미는 깨지지 않는 선에서 적당히 했습니다.

 

 

bring the parent to justice.

 

justice가 분명 정의로 쓰입니다. 직역하면 정의로 데려간다. 

원어민들을 법정에 세우다, 심판을 받게하다, 재판에 회부하다, 법에 따라 처벌하다 등으로 쓰입니다.

영어를 이해하기 가장 좋은 자세는 justice란 단어를 보았을 때 연상이 되는 것도 같이 생각해보면

모르는 표현이 나와도 잘 이해가 됩니다.

 

give me the slipper

 

슬리퍼가 아니다. give someone the slipper라는 숙어인데 "누군가를 치다." 라는 뜻을 가지고 있다.

그리고 slipper에서 slap을 생각해냈으면 정말 잘한 것이다. 

아까도 말했듯이 단어를 보고 연상되는 것을 항상 염두해 두는 것이 영어를 잘하는 지름길이다.

Dear SIr

Thank goodness the government has finally begun to see sense regarding the punishment of children! Let us hope that they have the courage to do away with the physical punishment of children. We supposedly live in a civilised society. Can we at last realise that physical punishment is unreasonable, degrading, mentally harmful and completely unacceptable in the 21st century? Smacking, indeed any form of physical punishment, should be made illegal immediately, and parents and teachers who practise this disgraceful activity should be brought before the courts.

이문장도 살짝 어려울 수 있는데  let us 가 사실 let's랑 같다. let us로 쓰면 약간 느낌이 달라지는데

Let's는 지금 당장 ~하자 라는 느낌이라면 let us 는 ~해보자 라는 ㅋㅋ 조금 약한느낌??

그래서 결국 해석하자면 they가 여기에선 정부를 뜻할텐데 의역하자면

" 정부가 신체적으로 아동을 체벌하는 것을 없애는데 주저하지 않기를 바라고 있다"

말 그대로 뒤를 보면, 나를 돌이켜보면 이런뜻으로 쓰인다.

남은게 없다는 말이다. 다 써버려서 남은 게 없는 것이다.

talk라고 써있지만 잔소리를 듣다, 설교를 듣다로 받아들이는게 더 느낌있다.

 

 

 

 

I can remember the first time I stood up to my dad. He wanted to punish me for coming back after midnight when I was 15 but I just told him I wasn't a child any longer and he couldn't tell me what to do.

 

 

to not run away from, to resist

stand 그대로의 뜻으로 꼿꼿이 서있는다, 즉 저항한다. 반항한다. 맞서다 이런 느낌이지만 그냥 대들다 라는 느낌이 더 와닿는다.

 

 

 

 

I don't exactly look down on parents who smack their children, but I do think that they could find other ways of diciplining their children if they really thought about it.

 

 

to consider inferior

아래를 보다, 즉 깔보다, 무시하다라는 뜻이다. 문장 안에서는 좋지 않게 생각하다 쯤 된다.

 

 

 

I was really badly behaved when I was a teenager but I seemed to grow out of it when I reached my early twenties.

 

 

to become too old to do something

grow가 자라다인데 out of 면 더 자랄수가 없을만큼 자란 느낌 오나? ~하기엔 너무 늙었다. 이런 느낌이다.

 

 

 

I didn't get into much trouble at school - except for once when I was caught fooling around with some chemicals in a science laboratory.

 

to behave irresponsibly

이건 그냥 외워야겠다. 무책임하게 행동하다인데 그냥 이건 나도 느낌이 안온다.
